The mismatched tables and chairs, quirky yet calming vibe and funky music make this a great bar for a first date, because you can have a drink and still order some picks from the menu that aren’t too heavy. The cocktail list in The Drift Bar & Grill* is immense. The list is long and the choice endless with calorie-controlled cocktails for the ladies, updated twisted classics, liquid desserts for the sweet toothed and my particular favourite afternoon delights – basically things like cream tea deconstructed and served in a martini glass. As for the food, skip the starters, they aren’t that great even if they sound it – trust me on this. Do order the lamb burger; it’s just bloody marvellous. The salty feta crumbled inside and the sweet charred piquillo peppers took the burger to the next level. And my god the sweet potato wedges dipped in creamy garlic mayonnaise were just dreamy. I’d also highly recommend the Bouillabaisse; anything with mussels, clams and grilled bread to dip in the sauce is good with me. And as for dessert, get the pudding shots but keep them to yourself, don’t share. Sticky chocolate brownie, sweet and sharp lemon peel crème brûlée & fruity black forest gateau knickerbocker glory all served in martini glasses– utter bliss!

Nueva Cobbler

Nueva Cobbler

Just off Oxford Street, down quaint Argyll Street and up on the fifth floor behind a veil of black organza material lies Aqua Kyoto. This luxurious secret haven houses a surprisingly affordable lunchtime menu* for those who love Japanese food. Choose from a choice of mains from the Don Buri set menu for just £12.50. What you get is a mini selection of things like baby squid and seasonal vegetables, Japanese pickles, fresh miso soup and a dessert such as white chocolate and coconut mousse, and then your Don Buri bowl of which there are five on offer. I had the seabass and tobiko sashimi donburi on top of sticky rice and a host of other delicious things that were eaten within a millisecond. The udon noodle soup was fabulous too; there were options such as braised pork and tempura prawns as well. The cocktails finished off the meal, two of the best cocktails I’ve tasted were ones I sampled at Aqua Kyoto. Try the Silver Sour, Nueva Cobbler or the Japanese Velvet.
